Answer Engine Optimization Explained: How AEO Is Different From Traditional SEO

AEO is about being the answer, not ranking above one. Here is what answer engine optimisation actually involves and how it differs from the SEO you already do.

By NetTrackers

Twenty years of SEO trained everyone to think about position. Where do we rank? Are we above the fold? Can we get from four to one?

Answer engines break that model. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot a question, there is no list. There is one answer, assembled from sources the system chose, sometimes with citations and sometimes without. You are either part of that answer or you are invisible — and there is no position two to console yourself with.

Answer engine optimisation is the work of being part of it.

What AEO Actually Is

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so that systems which return direct answers will use yours and, ideally, credit you for it.

That covers more ground than people assume. It is not only ChatGPT. It includes Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google's AI Overviews, and the voice assistants — Alexa and Siri — which have been returning single answers for years and were the original version of this problem.

The shift is from being findable to being usable. A page can be perfectly findable and completely unusable to an answer engine: the facts are there but buried in three paragraphs of preamble, or stated ambiguously, or contradicted elsewhere on the same site. Traditional search tolerates that. An answer engine, having to commit to a single response, tends not to.

The Four Differences That Matter

The goal is citation, not position. Success in SEO is a ranking you can screenshot. Success in AEO is your business appearing inside an answer, often with no click attached. That makes it harder to measure and easy to under-invest in, but it is not less valuable — appearing as the cited source at the moment someone is deciding is a strong position to be in.

The unit is the question, not the keyword. Keyword research asks what people type. AEO asks what people ask, which is longer, more conversational and more specific. "Emergency plumber London" is a keyword. "Who can fix a burst pipe in Clapham on a Sunday" is a question, and it is closer to how people actually phrase things when they are talking to a machine rather than typing into a box.

Format carries more weight. Answer engines reward content that leads with the answer and explains afterwards. Long build-ups, throat-clearing intros and conclusions that finally reveal the point are all liabilities. Direct answers near the top, clear headings, and short self-contained sections make content easy to lift accurately.

Trust signals do heavier lifting. When a system is deciding which of several sources to stake an answer on, credibility matters more than it does for a ranking. Author credentials, consistent information across your site, citations to real sources, and being mentioned elsewhere on the web all feed into whether you get chosen. A brand mentioned in fifty credible places is a safer bet, to a machine, than one mentioned nowhere.

If you are not sure whether AI systems currently understand your business at all, that is the thing to establish before optimising anything.

What AEO Work Actually Involves

In practice the work falls into four areas.

Finding the real questions. Not keyword lists — actual questions, from your own support inbox, your site search, sales calls, and tools that surface how people phrase things. The questions your customers ask before buying are almost always more specific than the keywords you currently target.

Restructuring content to answer them. Using the question as the heading, answering it in the first two sentences, then adding depth underneath. One question per section. This is a small change that makes a disproportionate difference to how cleanly a machine can extract your content.

Schema markup. FAQ, Article, HowTo, Organization, LocalBusiness — structured data hands a system clean, labelled facts rather than asking it to infer them from prose. It is the closest thing AEO has to a technical foundation, and most UK business sites are missing most of it.

Building credible mentions. Digital PR, industry publications, genuine expert commentary, consistent business listings. This is the slowest part and the hardest to shortcut, which is precisely why it separates businesses that get cited from those that do not.

How AEO and SEO Fit Together

They are not competing strategies and you should be sceptical of anyone selling them as such.

Almost everything that makes content work for an answer engine also helps it in traditional search. Clear structure, direct answers, accurate facts, schema, genuine authority — Google has been rewarding these for years. AEO is less a new discipline than a sharpening of an existing one, with a different definition of success attached.

The practical difference is emphasis. Traditional SEO leans on keyword relevance, link authority and technical health. AEO leans on comprehensiveness, clarity, structure and trust. You do both, on the same pages, and measure them differently.

For the wider context on how search is shifting, is SEO dead or evolving in 2026 covers the strategic picture, and our LLM SEO guide covers the underlying mechanics of how these systems select sources.

AEO or GEO?

You will see both terms, often used interchangeably, and the distinction is genuinely blurry.

The convention that holds up best: AEO originated around short, direct answers — featured snippets, voice results, the single reply from a chat assistant. GEO — generative engine optimisation — refers more to longer AI-generated responses that synthesise several sources, of the kind Google's AI Overviews produce.

In practice they overlap heavily and the work required is largely the same. If someone insists on a hard line between them, they are selling something. What matters is the shared goal: being the source a machine reaches for.

Where to Start

Start by finding out where you actually stand, because optimising blind is wasteful. A free LLM audit reports how ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity currently read your site and what they get wrong about your business.

From there, the work is what our answer engine optimisation service covers: question research, content restructuring, schema implementation and the authority-building that decides whether you get cited or your competitor does.

If you would rather do it yourself, the order above is the right order. Questions first, structure second, schema third, authority last — it is the slowest and it compounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is answer engine optimisation?

The practice of structuring content so that systems returning direct answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, voice assistants — use your content in their responses and cite you as the source.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO aims at a ranking position that earns a click. AEO aims at being included in a single generated answer, often without a click. SEO is organised around keywords; AEO is organised around questions. The technical groundwork overlaps heavily.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

They are closely related and often used interchangeably. AEO originally described short, direct answers such as snippets and voice results. GEO describes longer AI-generated responses that synthesise multiple sources. In practice the work is largely the same.

Does AEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Traditional search still drives the majority of discovery for most UK businesses. AEO is an additional layer on the same content, aimed at a different surface, and most of the work benefits both.

How do I measure AEO if there are no rankings?

Track whether your brand appears in AI answers for your target questions, monitor referral traffic from AI platforms, watch branded search volume over time, and check presence in featured snippets and People Also Ask. It is less precise than rank tracking, which is a real limitation rather than one to gloss over.

Do I need schema markup for AEO?

It is not strictly mandatory but it is the highest-leverage technical step available. Structured data hands machines clean labelled facts instead of asking them to infer meaning from prose, and most business sites are missing most of it.

How long does AEO take to show results?

First citations typically appear within four to eight weeks for lower-competition questions. Consistent presence across a topic builds over three to six months, largely because the authority component cannot be rushed.

Not sure if AI engines can see you?
